Six MCC Students Earn Top Honors at Statewide Competition

The Mott Community College (MCC) Dental Assisting Class of 2014 took top honors in the Annual Michigan Dental Assistants Association statewide meeting April 29, in Grand Rapids. A total of 12 MCC students participated in Student Day competitions against students from accredited dental assisting program across Michigan.

Student Jody Henderson, of Flushing, won first place in the James B. Bush Essay Contest. In addition to a cash prize her name will be added to the traveling plaque which will be held on MCC’s campus until next year's competition.

In the “I See I.C.” (Infection Control) Video Clip Competition, first place went to Jody Henderson, Nicole Lyne Cox, of Flushing, and Jordynn Elizando, of Linden, for their two-minute video about infection control. The student team of Angelina Davidek, of Flint, and Kayla Glover, of North Branch, and Chelsea Sirlet, of Flint, earned third place for their video.

“We are proud of our students for their performance at the statewide competition,” said Denise A. Polk, D.D.S. and Coordinator of the MCC Dental Assisting Program.

The program at MCC prepares students for positions as registered dental assistants, a licensed position in the state of Michigan. It is one of only nine schools in the state that offer this kind of program, according to Polk.

Students in the 2014 class are currently completing their externships and will graduate in June.
