Blue Ribbon Committee on Governance to Hold Public Workshops

The City of Flint’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Governance will be holding a series of 3 public workshops in May of this year to have discussions with Flint residents and collect feedback from them on possible changes to the structure of city government in Flint. Residents will be asked for their opinions and ideas on how to improve delivery of quality services, how to stabilize financial management and how to increase accountability of elected and appointed officials. The meetings times and dates are listed at the end of this release.

Residents are asked to give two hours of their time to attend one of these public workshops; each session will be conducted in the same format.  Results from all of the sessions will be compiled by the Blue Ribbon Committee.  The Committee will then make final recommendations to Emergency Manager Darnell Earley in June.  Mr. Earley will review the recommendations and determine methods of implementation.  Ordinance revisions, charter amendments or charter commission are each available options.

The Blue Ribbon Committee on Flint Governance is comprised of all volunteer citizens appointed by the Emergency Manager to make recommendations about how Flint governance can be improved to prevent the city from regressing into another period of receivership.  Since their appointment, the volunteer committee has met a number of times to learn and study how the city fell into financial difficulty and how the city was and is managed. The Committee will begin each workshop with a summary presentation of what they’ve learned followed by facilitated table discussions designed to collect ideas and opinions from residents on how to improve city governance.
